I’ve just finished illustrating an designing the poster for the 14th annual Punk Rock Bowling Tournament and Music Festival.

This 3-day festival has grown into one of the biggest punk events in the US, and I’m really happy I got to work on this.

Plus, since NOFX is headlining the first night, this poster partially absolves me from this monstrosity.

I designed title cards, lower thirds, chroma-key backgrounds and many of the supporting graphics for the new NutriBullet infomercial. Check it out!

My friend Jim recently posted this gem from 1988 on his Facebook page. It’s the first show I ever played (as part of Wicked Stupid Youth), and it’s the first show flyer I ever “designed.” Clearly this was before I went to Art School.

I love this flyer for 2 reasons:

1. NOFX headlined the show.
2. It’s truly horrible.

I had no recollection that NOFX played this show. They weren’t well known in 1988 and had only been together about 5 years. This may have even been their first tour.

This flyer was drawn by hand, way before computers were useful. I can practically smell the Sharpie fumes wafting off this masterpiece. The ball point pen I wrote the show details in was a stroke of genius.

Other than the glaring design and illustration problems, there are 3 big mistakes on this flyer:

1. NOFX, not NO FX.
2. NOFX is not from L.A.
3. Screaming Broccoli, not Screming Broccoli

The Oxford comma on the last “AND,” is a nice touch, and completely unnecessary. Also, is it “Show Starts” or “Shows Tarts?”

I’m going to make an updated 12 x 18 version of this flyer to correct the mistakes of the past.
